The Westgate School Slough

The Problem
The school had recently had a new extension built. This made the existing school buildings which had been built in stages over several decades look very dowdy, particularly the assembly hall which was accessed directly from the new building and the transition between old and new classroom blocks at the main staircase.

Master Group were asked by the school facilities manager to propose an upgrade the hall and stage and main staircase to the same standards as the new extension.

Westgate School, Slough

The Solution
The Hall and Stage
We proposed installing suspended ceilings between the existing laminated portal frame trusses and lining the walls with acoustic wall cladding incorporating large fabric covered pin boards to control reflected sound. New dimmable general lighting, upgraded stage lighting, sound and control systems including new electric projector screens and digital projectors. The upgrade was completed with new stage curtains and electrically operated blinds to high level windows. The existing doors were replaced with new oak veneered doors to match the new extension.

The Staircase
We proposed covering over the existing dark timber wall cladding, new oak veneered doors to the first floor corridor to match the new extension. New suspended ceiling and lighting to match the new extension. The existing staircase hardwood handrail and balustrades to be refurbished and new glass and aluminium balustrade to the 1st floor link landing to match the new extension.

The Result
Both hall and staircase were completely transformed into bright airy spaces which blended seamlessly with the new extension. The hall acoustics were also greatly improved and the stage lighting, sound and control systems now allowed professional quality productions.
